A fire pit is something that you are likely to find today in most houses with a backyard. Fire pits have multiple uses, and has been the center of many light family moments and also outdoor picnics. One of the most popular uses of a fire pit is however using it as a barbeque pit. For food lovers, fire pit can be converted into a pit that can cook delicious food for you with the help of wooden logs or charcoal. However, you would also need a grill grate or a tripod to cook anything on the barbeque fire pit.

The fire pit could be of any type available in the market, including iron & copper pits along with the traditional brick/stone pits too. With the pit fitted with the grilling grate, one can cook several tasty dishes. It is also an advantage that fire pits are generally large enough to make food for several people at a time. In this article we will share some tips about cooking on a fire pit barbeque.

1. The first thing is to get the fuel correct. If good firewood is used, it will be provide us with a better dish rather than the one we would have got using a soft wood. Soft woods wouldn’t be able to generate the heat required to grill the food properly, and heat loss will be fast too. Using woods that have their own aroma might be pleasant to smell but wouldn’t seem a great idea when it mixes with the smell of your food too! Similarly, an unseasoned hood would make you lose a lot of heat energy as it would first take time to evaporate the water inside it and then start burning properly. Therefore, one should only use hard wood that would be favorable for fast cooking. Some fruit and nut trees like apple, almond, peach are good ideas for barbeque fuel.

2. Another good idea is to initiate the cooking process quite ahead of the planned time for eating. Cooking in the open air can be challenging sometimes, but using fire pits with hot embers can hasten the process. First, the woods need to be given enough time to get burn down, and then cooking can start over hot embers. One can also stir the embers with a poker to keep them burning longer.

3. To cook the foods more efficiently and evenly, one can probably use a lid over the fire pit barbeque, as it can withhold heat. In case you are not using a rotisserie for cooking, larger roasts can be headed by indirect heat also, courtesy a fire pit lid. The lid can maintain the heat and also captures the firewood smoke in the food to enhance the taste and flavor.

4. Rotisserie cooking is also a great option, if you are planning to cook a large roast. However, you would need a rotisserie that can hold large roasts over the source of the heat and can help in making the food tasty and evenly cooked. While cooking the food is rotated over the fire source, and hence the heat and smoke is evenly distributed. It also prevents from the food getting burnt on one side. There are several dishes that one can make using rotisserie, which includes roasted legs of lambs and chicken and tequila chicken with lime.
