Gas Fire Pit
Making a Gas Fire Pit
A gas
fire pit is nice to have so that you can sit around with friends, family, or by yourself when enjoying
some down time. It is especially nice to sit around on a cool evening. However, you should have your materials
purchased and on hand so that you can build it without interruption. To start you will need to choose the area that
the pit will be built in and dig a reasonably sized hole for it either square or round, your choice.
Purchase the material and supplies in advance but you do not have too. A good home improvement store will have all
of the materials and supplies you will need, such as: wire mesh, gas burners (log lighters) and lava rocks. If you
are not a seasoned do-it-yourselfer you will need tools with which to remove the caps on the gas pipes. With all
materials and supplies in place you can now start to build your backyard fire pit.
Before you can
build a gas fire pit there are a few things you have to know about the steps you will need to take.
You should first know that you cannot install the gas burners until you’ve covered the drain with wire mesh to keep
the it from becoming clogged then purchase the gas burner, sometimes called log lighters, from a home improvement
store such as Home Depot and install it following directions.. This installation will require you to remove the
caps from the gas pipes. There is a hole in the bottom of the logs which can be adjusted to control the rate of gas
evaporation and the flame. Be sure to use a log lighter to put the flame in place and turn on the gas. When you
have tested the flame and are satisfied with it turn the gas off and turn the logs upside down so that the holes
are facing downward. By doing this you are distributing the flame evenly.
Do not add the
lava rocks until all of the connections are covered with wire cages. Add the lava rocks to the pit
under, around and on top of all of the connections. You now have a completed gas fire pit.
It is not
difficult to build the gas fire pit...It can be done with a minimum amount of tools. However, because
you are working with gas use extreme caution. Gas is combustible and you would not want your house or another
structure to become a part of that fire pit. When deciding upon the place to build that gas fire pit be sure to
keep it away from any structure that could catch fire. If you are not completely sure about how to handle the gas
portion of the building then call and rely on a professional to assist you. Remember that saying that it is always
better to be safe than sorry. With caution and care you should have a comfortable gas fire pit.
